About the author
Born in Berlin in 1956 of an English father and an Austrian mother, and long a resident in Vienna, Peter Waterhouse is one of Austria's leading contemporary poets, and a noted translator from both English and Italian into German — he has published a number of translations of the works of Michael Hamburger, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Andrea Zanzotto. For his own poetry he has received a number of prizes, including the manuskripte Prize (1990), the Heimito von Doderer Prize (1997), the Austrian State Prize for Translation (2002), and the H.C. Artmann Prize (2004).
He studied German Language & Literature, English Language & Literature, and Philosophy in Vienna and Los Angeles, and obtained his PhD in 1984 with a work on Paul Celan. His more recent books include Krieg und Welt (a novel/memoir, Jung und Jung, Vienna, 2006), Menz (poetry, Literaturverlag Droschl, Graz, 2002), Prosperos Land (poetry, Jung und Jung, 2001), Verloren ohne Rettung (poetry, Jung und Jung, 2001). In 2006/2007 Peter Waterhouse is Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of East Anglia, where the subjects of his lectures include Hölderlin, Michael Hamburger, his own most recent book, and "Living Between Langauges". Shearsman Books hope to publish most, if not all of these lectures in book form.
