A Farewell to Everything is a translation of the author's 1997 German collection Ein Strich durch alles (Suhrkamp Verlag, Frankfurt): ninety nine-line poems written over a 21-month period. The book is made available thanks to a translation grant from Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Culture Foundation.
Ilma Rakusa is the author of several collections of poetry and prose – her prose volume Steppe, translated by Solveig Emerson, is also available in English translation (Burning Deck, Providence, 1997) – and is a busy translator from French, Russian, Serbo-Croat and Hungarian, the authors including Marguerite Duras, Marina Tsvetaeva, Alexei Remizov, Danilo Kiš, Imre Kertész and Péter Nádas.
Modern Poetry in Translation (in Series 3, No. 5) said of this volume:
"A wonderful edition of [Ilma] Rakusa's 1997 German collection, Ein
Strich durch alles, providing what it says on the can, ninety exquisite
nine-line poems, deftly translated by Shields and Winnard."
