The author's third full-length collection, covering work written between 1990 and 1995.
"In Larksong Signal techniques usually associated with musical composition are very much in evidence. The book collects various poems written during the period 1990-1995. Given that Caddel is co-director of the Basil Bunting Poetry Centre at the University of Durham, it is no surprise how important music and sound are in this book.
The poem 'Ground' takes as a theme a description by E.M. Nicholson of a group of birds feeding on the ground. The ensuing variations follow musical principles. Changing the key is achieved by re-applying descriptive phrases to different characters in different situations. The rhythms are augmented or diminished by changes in the lineation, particularly so in the witty 'Homage to W.C.W.' where Nicholson's theme is arranged using William Carlos Williams' carefully breathed short line. Changes in the accompaniment in the style of Ravel are achieved by interleaving the initial theme with other material. And so on.
...This is a vibrant and varied book, the perfect accompaniment to a late-night bottle of wine." (Randolph Healy, Orbis)
