Ordering Shearsman publications

Trade Orders

With effect from from ISBN 0-907562-34-5 to 0-907562-99-x (and all ISBNs beginning 1-905700-), trade orders for our publications — which are produced on a print-on-demand basis — should be routed through Bertrams or Gardners Books in the UK, and through Ingrams or Baker & Taylor in the USA. For all older publications, and for chapbooks, orders should be made direct to the press if possible. Some current titles, especially those by American authors, and a number of backlist titles are also available from SPD in Berkeley, CA. We can also supply most POD titles within the UK from stock, although we would prefer that trade orders go through the channels mentioned above. Even if the distributors do not have stock, they are able to obtain copies very quickly. In the USA, for instance, Ingrams' turnaround time for orders is 24 hours.

Retail Orders - Direct from the Press

Inland orders

We can accept direct orders by mail, provided that full payment in pounds sterling accompanies the order. Please allow £1.50 to cover postage & packing for single-copy orders. For two books or more, postage and packing charges are waived. Payment should be in the form of a cheque or money order payable to Shearsman Books Ltd. We will be able to pricess credit cards later in 2008 but at the moment (Jabuary 2008) we are unable to do so.

Overseas orders

For shipment outside the UK, please check with us first as to the shipping charges, since these will be passed on at cost. We regret that we are unable to accept payment by credit card at this time; if this is essential, please order via the Salt Publishing webstore or other online outlets such as amazon.com or amazon.co.uk. Nearly all of our titles are available from amazon.com on 24-hour turnaround, and the great majority are available in the same way from amazon.co.uk.

We can accept foreign currency cheques for amounts in excess of £75 (ca. US$145). For smaller amounts please add the equivalent of £7.50 ($14.00) to cover our clearing charges. North American purchasers are best advised to order through a US online outlet, as the books will be printed in the US to meet the order, and – given the current exchange rates – are cheaper in the US than in the UK.

From UK Booksellers

Any bookseller in the UK can source books from us but, in practice, many will not order small quantities from independent publishers. Our books are available through their normal ordering channels, however, and don't let them tell you otherwise. If they say that the distributors are out of stock, tell them to order anyway: the system works very well; do not be brushed off by sales clerks who do not know what they are talking about.

A large part of our list, and all titles from 2003 onwards, can also be sourced through Amazon UK, which will assist those who wish to purchase by credit card. Most titles are available within 24 hours. All of these titlescan also now be sourced from Salt Publishing's online store.

Ordering Shearsman books in the United States

Most of our non-POD backlist publications, and some more recent titles, are available from Small Press Distribution, Inc., 1341 Seventh Street, Berkeley, CA 94710, USA. Tel: (510) 549-3336. The full catalog is available online. We will continue to place future titles by US authors with SPD.

With effect from the introduction of print-on-demand to the Shearsman Books list, most titles published in 2003 and later (ISBN 0-907562-34-5 and up) can be ordered through Amazon.com (which has all of our p.o.d. titles available within 24 hours), through other online suppliers, or through the normal US trade channels. The distributors for Shearsman titles are Ingrams or Baker & Taylor. Exceptions to this are the David Jaffin titles, which are only available from SPD, and chapbook titles which are only available from the press direct. Please note that the occasional title is sold in the UK only, where we do not have North American rights. Powells' online store in the US also carries our front list, but charges a small premium on each title, which means that Amazon is cheaper.

Buyers from elsewhere in the world may also find it easier to order from SPD, as they can accept credit card payments by telephone and via the internet, or from Amazon's UK and US operations. Customers of Amazon.com will find that their account with the American parent can be used to purchase from the British company also, although the overseas shipping costs may make small purchases prohibitively expensive. Customers may now also purchase our POD titles from Salt Publishing's online store, which has a US window as well as a British one.

Ordering Shearsman publications in Ireland

Three of our publications, Trevor Joyce's with the first dream of fire they hunt the cold, and the two titles by Michael Smith are co-publications with the Dublin-based New Writers' Press. These can be ordered through any Irish bookseller or also from Wild Honey Press' online mail-order service. Some other titles, such as Michael Smith's co-translations of Vallejo are available from Books Upstairs, 36 College Green, Dublin 2.

Other publications should be ordered direct from the press or from online outlets in the UK.
